surrounded by idiots, part v

to set the stage:

our parking space is right by the door, and so there is a fire hose close to the entrance. fire hoses are contained in metal rectangular boxes hung on the wall, with a glass door and locked to prevent tampering.

we went grocery shopping last night. we were only gone for about half an hour since
we didn't have a lot to buy, just enough for lunches for the rest of the week. when we came home, someone had smashed the glass part of the fire hose box. it was pretty thick so it must have taken some force to break it and bend the frame of the door.

luckily none of the glass shards injured little midgie, and we alerted the concierge who swept most of it away to avoid puncturing a tire. i'm surprised he didn't make us fill out a form, since they seem to like making us fill out forms for everything we do. but i digress.

i can't even imagine why someone would do that...perhaps it was an accident or maybe the incredible hulk lives in our building and something happened that really annoyed him and he snapped...although if i were the hulk, i would have taken out the hose and started swinging it around so as to do damage to more things, because why stop at just breaking the glass? oh well, it's probably better that the incredible hulk didn't take my idea into consideration...

scene it!

in the GTA, you can get a scene card for free, where you collect points everytime you see a movie. you get 100 points per transaction, so you have to make sure that if you're with someone, you pay separately. once you get 1000 points, you can see a movie for free. last night, we redeemed our free movie and saw transformers. it was very enjoyable, and the fact that we only had to pay for one admission, it made it even better!

the scene card also gives you 10% off concessions, so instead of paying $20 for popcorn, you only pay $18 - what a deal!

incidentally, we also saw harry potter the previous night. apparently being on vacation = seeing movies all the time. it also was excellent, although i found some of the pregnant pauses in the conversations to be a little annoying. luna lovegood surprised me by being very convincing. there were several omissions, of course, and some small details were changed, but i found that it didn't interfere with the original storyline, which is always important. now i count down to saturday, when book 7 will be delivered to my house!

miko's log: vacation, day 7

today was the day to drive home. the weather was beautiful, as it usually is when one is packing up to go home. we had lunch at a great place that i wish we had discovered earlier in the trip so we could have dinner there. oh well, next time.

kris had to return a shirt that we bought in montreal, but since it was exchange only and kris couldn't find anything, i was forced to buy a really pretty shirt that i love. too bad, so sad. we went back to the polish restaurant and spotted many more jiggly girls. we didn't see that many in quebec city, so it must be a montreal thing. we were entertained by a mime who kept getting attacked by a mini dog, a terrier of some sort. he quickly chose another restaurant to perform for.

we arrived home at 2:30am, tired but happy. scout missed us greatly and kept trying to meow but since she hadn't talked in a while, it came out more as a squawk. cute! just three more days before we have to go back to work...

day 6: quebec city
our last full day in quebec. although i do enjoy shopping here and there was none of that today, it was probably the funnest day of our vacation.

we visited place royale again, where we went to the museum of civilization. we first reunited ourselves with canadian history, then went to learn about dragons. after that, we decided to do something about our craving for fresh fruit. i really really wanted an apple; i usually have an average of one and a half a day and i was missing the crunchy, sweet goodness. we stumbled upon a food market (how convenient!) that sold fresh strawberries that looked and tasted just like the ones from my parents' garden growing up. no apples, though. from this marketplace, we also bought some cheese where the girl wanted to charge us 59 cents, then realized it was $5.90. we got some deli meat where the lady kept telling us each product was their very very best. we stopped at a park to eat some strawberries and ended up with very pink fingers!

on our way back to the hotel, we discovered some parts of the old city that we haven't seen yet, which is always exciting. then we bought a baguette and a bottle of wine...at this point, the clouds were looking very omnious and gave way to rain showers as we were walking up the hill to our hotel (did i mention that you can't beat the location?) which just seemed like a perfect end to our day of walking. and we had a picnic in our room. and then we took a nap. i love being on vacation!

day 5: quebec city
the weather was gorgeous today. we did a lot of walking and shopping and investigated many of the nooks and crannies of the old city. we went to the museum at place royale. we had our nice dinner this night instead of on our real anniversary since the weather was yucky. we ate at an authentic quebecois restaurant that served such fare as caribou and goose. as expected, kris opted for the pork and i was only a little more adventurous with lamb. although we aren't risk-takers when it comes to food, we know what we like!

we arrived at our hotel with little incident. simone disappointed us by taking us through a strangely inefficient route to the old city (i believe we said "i don't remember seeing this" about five times before we decided that she was taking us on an unorthodox route). we stayed at the hotel clarendon, which is the oldest hotel in the entire province of quebec. you can't beat the location, in the heart of le vieux quebec, steps away from the shops and restaurants. we walked around for a bit, visited the stores that were still open and, of course, indulged in some poutine - mmm, cheese curds - before turning in for the night.

day 4: quebec city
happy anniversary to us! it rained today. a lot. and it was cold. it made me thankful for the beautiful weather we had at our weddding. the rain didn't dampen our spirits though; having checked the weather when packing, we were prepared. we had crepes for brunch and did some shopping. we also visited some churches and thought about going to a museum but decided to take a nap instead. dinner was at an italian place and then we went for a long walk and took some silly pictures, inspired by amelie's pictures from her trip to europe:

day 2: montreal to quebec city
we slept over at amelie's place and in the morning, went for breakfast with her "new" boyfriend. he's not really new, but the first time we had met him. we said good bye to amelie and peter and went off in search of a favoured clothing brand that used to be available in toronto but is now only in montreal. we found it, yay! then we went for an early dinner at a polish restaurant. here we were able to watch many interesting people and invented a game where we point out women who aren't wearing bras. it doesn't seem like much of a fun game, but it is. our code word was "jiggly" so as to not announce to everyone what we were doing. women in quebec are quite liberated, i must say. then we set off for quebec city.

miko's log: vacation, day 1

our dear friends, karlene and brian had a birthday party to celebrate their turning 30. we kept insisting that we weren't going to "celebrate" too hard, and told them that we didn't have to sleep over, but we ended up doing both. this made waking up the next morning a little difficult, never mind the 6 hour drive to montreal. luckily i had already packed in advance on the off-chance that we decided to "celebrate" too hard, so we departed on schedule.

the drive was extra fun since we had midge (our newish car) for comfort and dual climate control (i didn't have to bring 5 different things to layer on as the ride progressed) and simone (the GPS computer woman inside) for directions. our trip, in a few nutshells:

day 1: toronto to montreal
we stopped at tim horton's two times en route. we went for dinner with amelie and ate yummy and unique sushi. surprise ingredients in the sushi rolls included strawberries and sweet potato (not in the same roll) amongst others that i can't remember now. very tasty. we went to the jazz festival where we heard pretty much every other genre of music except for jazz. the people watching was good though, as it always is in the province of quebec; more about this later.

i want a ferret!

i never thought i would want a ferret. they look too much like rats combined with weasels.

we went to pj pets today. i actually have serious ethical problems even going in that store because i know that they are the bad guys of the pet world, encouraging inbreeding (resulting in unhealthy animals)and subjecting their merchandise to wallow in gruesome conditions. one of my friend's mothers actually sued pj pets because the dog they bought had so many health problems, and my friend and her family aren't allowed to go into pj pets. luckily for me, i am still allowed because the animals are sooo cute so i can never resist.

back to my story. ferrets.

i don't go out of my way to visit the ferrets. i usually spend most of my time playing with the kittens, taking pictures of them with my cell phone, and sending the pictures of cuteness to kris, only to have him tell me that we can't get another kitten. it's a good thing i have him, otherwise i would have 30 cats and a wardrobe i can't afford.

back to my story. ferrets.

we stopped at the ferret cage today because one of the ferrets was gnawing on the sign declaring the price, which caught my attention. then this other ferret that couldn't seem to walk but hopped everywhere, attacked the gnawing ferret. then they started chasing each other around the cage, and the bounding ferret kept running into things, falling over and landing in his water dish. they weren't very graceful but oh-so-adorable! soon clumsy ferret was all wet from having fallen in his water dish so many times (the other ferret didn`t seem to have this problem). then both ferrets decided they would burrow underneath the towel lining the whole cage and chase each other, upending toys and dishes.

cuuuute. i don't think scout would take too well to these furry creatures in her territory. sometimes she doesn't even like when we are in her personal space...
