re: crash into me - part one

if meredith had any sense at all, she would just COMMIT to the guy she's dating and then he will be dating her. honestly. and i have to say, cristina is a more convincing dancer than meredith. meredith was actually embarassing to watch. very floppy. actually, it reminded me of addison's naked dancing in private practice. blech.

i've said it before, but i'll say it again. i love the chief and his relationship with meredith. the scene with with stan's wife saying good bye...was heartbreaking.

how could the white supremacist paramedic work with the coloured driver? or is it just when it comes to people treating him medically? i mean, i'm no expert on white supremacists, but his partner seemed concerned about him, which to me, means that he isn't an ass to her. bailey's scene at the end, where she calls on jesus and then slices open the swastika - so powerful.

and yes - two sure things in this episode: that the guy's carotid artery would burst, (and when lexie was in the room), and that bailey would miss lunch with her husband.

this week's episode is a re-run! so that means we have to wait another week to see the conclusion. and then after that, the radio tells me that there's only one more episode before they run out. sadness.

farewell, oil country

this morning, i woke up early to catch my plane. this is the most eventful of the three days, i have to say. i had packed my things the night before, but still ended up leaving a little later than expected. when i left the hotel, there was an airport shuttle that was just leaving, and i decided to take it instead of paying double for a cab. plus, it was perfect timing.

well, the shuttle goes around to all the hotels to pick up other people, which would have been okay had i had a little more time, and also the guy didn't take the highway, which means it took much longer to get to the airport than i thought. i thought it's not a big deal though, because i've already checked in, i just needed to print my boarding pass from the self-serve kiosk. when i got there, the machine told me i was too late, and needed to go to an actual person. so i did that, but there was a line-up, and only two very slowly moving people, one of whom disappeared for several minutes. she was the one who served me. by the time i got to her, probably 15 minutes had passed, and i was getting antsy. she was very pleasant, so i was pleasant back. she asked me for my destination and last name - when i gave it to her and she discovered i was very late, she turned into a very mean person. she started lecturing me about how late i was, that they weren't going to hold the plane for me, that i was going to miss my flight and lose the money i had paid. i knew that i was late, but couldn't really do anything about it, and i don't know how she thought that her scolding me would fix things or turn time back. i ended up sprinting to security in my three-inch heels.

at security, there were two ladies talking. chatting about nothing, really. i didn't know if i was allowed to go in the priority/disability lane and i could have snaked through all the rope divider thingies, but as i was rudely told, i was very late and needed to rush. i didn't want to just barge through the priority/disability lane for fear of being tasered and then killed, so i thought i would wait to ask. these ladies talked for what seemed like HOURS (but was probably only 20 seconds) before they acknowledged me. i'm sure it looked like i had to pee my pants because i wasn't very discreet about wanting to talk to one of them. finally, i got through security, and i heard the final boarding call for my flight. it was gate 16, which was very far away from where i was...i sprinted again, to the gate, and as i ran up, they were calling my name over the loudspeaker. actually calling my name. i'm THAT person, who's so late, they have to call your name. sigh.

the flight was uneventful again, and i slept for most of it. but that's not all.

i arrived in toronto at 2:06pm EST. i had to work at 4pm, so this was just enough time to grab a cab home, throw together some food for work, and get there in time to teach until 9:30pm. i got home, and was happy to see my cute kitty who had missed me very much. perhaps my cute kitty missed me so much, that is the reason why she puked three times on the bedroom floor. instead of getting food ready, i had to clean up cat vomit. i'm not even sure why this happened, but she seems to be fine now. strange.

by this point, i hadn't eaten anything at all yet, other than the bag of pretzels from the plane. i threw together some food quickly to eat immediately, but didn't have time to gather food for work. my solution? i called one of my work friends and basically blurted out in a big run-on sentence that i had just gotten back from the airport, that my cat puked on the floor, i had to clean it up, i might be late for work, so could he get me some dinner later that night so i don't have to get it before work and so i don't starve? he said yes. three cheers for friends.

and now kris doesn't finish up in edmonton until tuesday...then he flies to vancouver for another short presentation, then back home on friday. looks like it's only us girls for the week. just as long as there's no more cat vomit, i'll be just fine.

welcome to oil country, day two

we woke up fairly early since i didn't want to be jet-lagged when i flew back home today. we went for breakfast which was extremely disappointing. the "hostess" (i use the term loosely because she wasn't very hostess-y) told us that there were no tables left, except for that one. we asked what was wrong with that one. she said nothing, but there's no where to sit. oh, except there. there was a couple that was leaving their booth, so we asked if we could sit there. problem solved. we still don't know what was wrong with the first table.

service was slow and the food was not only overpriced, but also terrible. i've made a mental note in case we ever return to edmonton, not to go to albert's family restaurant.

we considered visiting the waterpark at the big mall, but decided to see a movie instead. afterwards, we went to a japanese restaurant where there were numerous pictures of oilers who have patronized this restaurant. apparently it's a favourite for them. we didn't see any though - that was a little disappointing. it was snowing and -20 degrees, so our short walk back to the hotel was long enough.

we were going to visit the lounge for a drink, but decided to go to sleep early again since i had to wake up early...

welcome to oil country, day one

kris has to go to edmonton to do a 30 minute presentation for his work. the conference landed on a tuesday, so we decided to take advantage of his free flight. on top of that, the fairmont macdonald was offering ridiculously low rates to microsoft employees. with that, how could i refuse a weekend in edmonton?

we flew out on saturday morning. our flight there was uneventful, thankfully. we flew west jet, and were slightly disappointed by the lack of smiles that we received (not that we weren't treated nicely, we just kind of thought we'd see more, based on their commercials).

we arrived at 9:45am MST. i should tell you that the hotel lost our reservation (we discovered this when we called the night before to ask for an earlier check-in time). the call centre monkey told us they couldn't honour the cheaper rate and also told us we couldn't check in until 7:30pm, but to go to the hotel when we arrive, and they might be able to help us. so we did that when we arrived, and they gave us the cheaper rate, free parking for one night for the inconvenience and a slightly earlier check-in: 5:30pm. we were planning to go to west edmonton mall anyway, so we accepted their offer, stowed our baggage and off to the mall we went.

i have to say, i was a little disappointed by west edmonton mall. is it wrong that i kind of thought it would be bigger? what with all the hype, i thought it would be more than two storeys, and i don't know...just bigger. although we did enjoy the lack of provincial tax - i had been saving to buy some things for this trip. i bought a scarf, gloves and a new eyeshadow that i've been eyeing. all at 6% tax - woo hoo!

we went back to the hotel and took a nap in our beautifully appointed room. then off we went, to see the oilers play! happiness! my student got us free tickets, which was exciting...it took a little while for us to locate said tickets, but we eventually got to the correct ticket counter. platinum level seats! with club access! it was wonderful. the game was exciting and as fun as i thought it would be; thankfully i didn't build up this experience too much in my head, unlike west edmonton mall. and west jet. the best part was that the game went into a shoot-out, and we won! yay! it was so nice to see oiler logos and ads everywhere.

we finished the night with some beer and pub food and turned in by midnight since technically we had been up since 2:30 MST. zzzz...

mambo italiano?

i have blogged about my supercute asian student who sometimes calls me yuh-miko. i also teach her younger brother, who also happens to be a supercute asian. coincidence??

so tonight, we were talking about different volume levels in music, like forte and mezzo-piano. he told me that these words are italian. i asked him how he knew that, and was he italian? he gave me a blank stare and said: "no. are you?" he didn't get the fact that i was trying to be funny since he is clearly not italian...but i guess it went over his head.

drinky drinky

we went to the food and wine show last night. we didn't get there until around 8pm. we were greeted with a lady who said that they weren't selling anymore tickets because the place was at capacity...this was annoying since we had just spent $15 on parking...gotta love toronto...but people were lined up at the ticket window, and after some investigation, it turns out they just started selling tickets again. the lady kept telling everyone to go home though, i guess she didn't get the memo.

it was fun, and gave us a chance to try wines that we wouldn't normally consider because of the price tag. we also found some great reds with a normal price tag, which is exciting. i also tried a really nice lychee sake. the only problem is that it's only available to licensees, but we went with a friend who works at a conference centre, so he's going to buy a case and let us buy bottles through him. yummy.

re: forever young

at first, i thought lexie brushing alex off was a good thing becuase it gave thatch an opportunity to apologize to meredith; when meredith believed everything her dad said, it seemed to heal meredith a little...then lexie crushed her happiness and she's back to square one, if not negative one. i always love seeing the chief stand in as meredith's father.

about the girl who broke her butt. in unversity, i fell on a stair - not down the stairs...just plop, on a stairstep...it was surprisingly painful and i swore that i broke my bum. the doctor said that's not possible. he lied!

i really enjoy the complexity of the character that is bailey. first she's lecturing everyone not to act like they're in high school, and her words end up haunting her through this episode - in every way. she was doing everything she told her residents not to do, right down to the crying! i have to say that blubbering bailey is way better than blubbering izzie. the scene with derek at the end was wonderful and touching...of course he was a band geek. THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH BEING A BAND GEEK. i just wonder if bailey realizes that she still has a mushroom haircut?

my favourite line of the episode: "hey dad, want to get a drink?" haha! and finally...to rose (the nurse): back off, bitch!

introducing gambit bilan

our friend sebastian (bargnani look-alike) got a puppy! it's a black lab and he named it gambit. GAMBIT IS THE CUTEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN!

we always said we would get another kitten in a few years. well, i always said that. but maybe we should get a puppy...hmm...

re: physical attraction...chemical reaction

this is where the shocking storylines from the season premiere unravel and we realize that yes, the writers do know what they're doing...too bad they're on strike now.

george and izzie have no chemistry! i knew it! i'm sure this will somehow change in the future, but at least i can sleep well knowing that the writers don't buy their relationship either. chalk one up for sibling love.

bailey gets the chief resident job! of course she does! she's obviously the best for it. i like how bailey was so strong throughout the episode, and gave callie all the credit for her great ideas, but broke down at the end when the chief gave her the position. it showed how much she really wanted it. question...did callie actually get fired fired or just fired from the chief resident position? i'm assuming the latter...poor callie. she loses her husband. and then her title.

the unusual couples - the chief and derek...sloan and hahn...lexie and meredith...daddy and baby keisha. some of them worked well together, some didn't. i liked the asymmetry of that. one thing i didn't buy at all: when meredith was working on the mother and lexie kept bothering her asking her if she would be okay, and meredith said "i'm a little busy, okay, lex?" lex?? i say it takes two people to be friends before they can start giving each other nicknames, even if they are just unoriginal short forms of your given name.

finally, the heartbreaking scene at the end. i have issues with tv shows abruptly turning characters into alcoholics (case in point: kirsten in the o.c.), but it still made my heart ache. and in this situation i suppose it makes sense, because thatch no longer has the love of his life in his life, although you would think his daughters and granddaughter would make up for it. i guess you can never predict how people will react...that, and these aren't real characters anyway...

sicko miko

i am sick. again. this is the third time in five weeks that i've been sick, reminding me of when i first started working at the school, when my immune system was low and i was weak! now it appears i have become weak again - or maybe just run-down with wearing too many different hats at work. figuratively, of course. wearing too many hats literally would probably ward me from sickness if you listen to the old-fashioned wives' tales.

yesterday, my student came in looking terrible. i asked him how he was doing, and he said bad because he has the flu, and stayed home from school all day. luckily his fever broke just before his lesson. sarcasm. so now i'm sick. i can't even stay home tomorrow because i'm running a meeting.

my allergies have also been bad since the spring, so when i'm not sick, my allergies are attacking me, so i haven't really have any nasal refuge for a while. i have found that when my allergies are bothering me, if i have to sneeze but can't, it's mildly annoying. when i'm sick though, if my sneeze is interrupted, it's like the worst feeling ever. i feel my head is going to blow up and explode if i don't release the pressure through sneezing. and then when i finally do sneeze, i sneeze 8 times in a row.

blah.

an addendum to people who look like people, part xi

**edited to add: the video doesn't appear to be working. i will troubleshoot, hopefully it will work soon.

although i've seen this video before, i find it funnier since kris has labeled himself as the big panda, and me as the little one...for several reasons too. the obvious size difference between us (although not to the extreme of the two pandas). the fact that the little panda is sleeping in this video, and the big panda is snacking, our respective favourite hobbies. and of course, the little panda and i have similar sneezes...i too, often scare kris because of these enormous sneezes.

people who look like people, part xi

this came up a long time ago, thanks to hayley. i couldn't find a good picture comparison though, which is why this took so long.

my husband:

liev schreiber:

kris is slightly offended because he thinks liev looks old and is typecast as creepy scary guys in movies. he has retaliated with a comparison, which i will post posthaste...

sleep-deprived

i've been so tired lately. although i'm sure delaying the change over to eastern standard time saves a lot on electricity costs and makes the days seem longer for one more week...i really think that my body was used to having an extra hour of sleep by now. add to that the fact that our high-tech belongings tried to be helpful by changing the time automatically, making for a disconcerting and groggy week.

i will relish the extra zzzs tonight. is it bad that i'm considering going to bed right now?

re: kung fu fighting

pretty and prettier. sigh. derek is definitely prettier. i like that we're getting away from the mcdreamy and mcsteamy - as cute as that is, it's getting a little old. thanks to that comment, hahn is growing on me. she's spunky and fierce and stands up for herself. it makes perfect sense that she joined a bunch of other spunky and fierce and self-defending women. she also looks nicer than last season with her flowing blonde hair.

mer and der's tender moment in the on-call room was nice. and definitely not the behaviour of two people who are friends with benefits. which gives me hope. yay!

lexie and alex. maybe i've been doing too many word jumbles, but when i just typed their names, i realized how similar they are. alexie? ha! just like how i know a couple named paul and pauline. i wonder if that was done purposely. probably not because that's silly. at first when i saw the final scene, i thought lexie was really callous and cold, going to meredith's dead mother's house with a potential one night stand. then i realized that of course she wouldn't know that alex lived with meredith because that would mean they talked, and alex made it clear that's not what he was looking for. and how was lexie able to spend the ENTIRE day with alex? wasn't cristina looking for her? since when did interns disappear for a minute, never mind a day, without their resident looking for them?

one last thing. i detest blubbering izzie. i didn't like it when she was begging denny to let her kill him, and i didn't like it tonight. it's just too much.
