re: lay your hands on me

*this is long overdue, and i planned on watching it again before posting my initial thoughts, but i haven't had time. so i'll just post it and hope i didn't miss anything too big. besides, hayley's busy with her new house, so i'm sure she won't notice what i did miss.

this may be the last new episode for a long time, and i have to squeeze as much enjoyment out of this episode as possible to tide me over...so where shall i start?

bailey's son. this was so heartbreaking, both because of the brutal injuries inflicted upon such a little boy, but also because of the damage done to bailey's marriage. i can only imagine how easy it would be to point the finger here, but it still makes me sad to think that when their son needs them most to work together, they are still divided. as an aside, i know that bailey's busy, but i would have thought that she would have taken some time to talk to her husband after last episode. apparently not. i also thought it was sad how they were putting off baptizing the baby when they had more time...it's one of those things you take for granted, that the baby is going to be fine, day in and day out, until he grows up to be an adult. that's just what you assume, which is why it seems okay to delay the baptism...but when something like this happens, you realize that time is precious, and you can't count on your baby outliving you.

i have tried valiantly to dislike rose. i really have. but she's so sweet and funny and real. i can't hate her, i just can't do it! i'm certain the writers did this on purpose. i actually don't mind the thought of her and derek together, just as long as i get to see his goopy eyes, which i did see when he asked her out for dinner. but. they wouldn't just abandon the mer/der storyline, so they are clearly going to get back together (for the 18th time - one would think this is getting a little old? sadly, i'm still in it for the long haul), so that means rose is probably going to get hurt in the process. and that makes me a little sad.

meredith and derek were working things out. slowly she was opening up to him, and that's when she finds out about rose. i can understand why she's angry. i can also see her point that he just wants someone to fill the space beside him. i can see derek's point that no matter what he does, meredith keeps bringing up the past and old excuses as to why she can't trust him. sigh. what a complex relationship.

the healers...this was a bit hokey, but like the chief said, whatever they do, it can't hurt. it was kind of neat to see a hospital using alternative forms of medicine since i'm sure this is usually dismissed.

cristina's compassion for little tuck was wonderful and touching. especially after her extremely comical robot impression.

izzie. WHO WAKES UP WITH PERFECTLY DONE MAKE-UP? especially luminous eyeshadow?? this was a little too much. and if she's sleeping with her make-up on, then she should at least have bad skin, otherwise why do i wash MY face every night?

i like how they keep alluding to alex's past, with a few snippets here and there, reminding us he is the way he is because of his childhood. i can't wait for the future episode that centres around his past...if there will be a future episode, that is...grumble grumble!

cabbage patch miko-chan

why do things like cabbage and lettuce come in such large portions? they should sell lettuce halves, like they sell watermelon wedges. you can buy lettuce-in-a-bag, but i would rather just have regular lettuce since lettuce-in-a-bag has a funny taste to it. or they could engineer mini-cabbages, like they have mini-watermelons. i guess that would be brussel sprouts. not the same, though. OOH, what about a square cabbage? that would be fun!

the reason why i went on this tangent...i had a craving and bought napa cabbage. it's huge. so i'm finding different ways of using it, which is like a fun game. i'm planning on making oknomiyaki, a japanese cabbage pancake thingie, but it takes a long time to slice the cabbage, so it will have to be a weekend activity. i also bought a huge bag of rice crackers. i'm feeling rather japanese these days...

oh, and to add to this very tangenty post, i taught my 10-year old student the meaning of the phrase, "i digress". i think that's funny.

resolution update

i figure it will be easier to keep my resolutions if i keep updating you on how i'm doing. so here goes:

1. complain less. yes, i have tried to complain less. i think i'm doing well, but it's hard to tell since i don't have a complain-o-meter. note to self: invent a complain-o-meter.

2. exercise more. okay, i haven't ACTUALLY gone to the gym yet...but i've thought about it a couple times with very good intentions. and the goal is to work out MORE than i did last year, which won't be hard to do since i didn't really go that often. and walking is out of the question now that it's been so frigid outside, although we did walk from the parking garage downtown to the home show today AND walked around to all the exhibits. does that count?

3. we went to church today! yay me. i was going to go last week, but i was working.

4. i haven't been able to read more because a) i haven't seem melissa for her to
give me her books to read and b) i've been too busy. but i will.

january update

wow. things have been so busy lately. a recap of my life for the past little while:

this is one of the busiest times of the year at work. we had our postponed christmas party thingie last sunday. because it got postponed, the date ended up conflicting with new teacher training that had already been scheduled. this meant that i worked 12 hours on sunday. then the rest of the week was taken up by furiously writing 30 performance reviews, and there were a couple more 12 hour days in there, along with 10 hour days for the rest. but the bulk of it is done, so i'm a little thankful i put in the time to make this coming week hopefully less busy.

we thought we were going to put our condo on the market tomorrow, so last week was also spent cleaning, de-cluttering, re-organizing and preparing to make our house show-worthy. we got rid of some furniture, packed some things away, threw out a fair amount and we finally got the tiles that cracked again, repaired again. this time, the installer didn't forget to leave the fridge unplugged, mostly because kris was home when the guy was here. he WAS 6 days late in coming though, but who's counting? (see, this is me trying to not complain! more about my resolutions in the next post!).

then we met with our real estate agent. as i said, we were going to list our condo tomorrow, but after some discussion, decided to hold off until february 1. there are couple units with our same layout on other floors selling, so we're hoping they will sell first so we have less competition.

our townhouse may be delayed, not because it won't be finished in time, but because the builder is struggling with the city to ensure timely hydro hook-up. hydro is a good thing to have when one lives in a house, so we are okay with waiting for this. we will find out tomorrow if there will be a delay, and for how long. this is also why we were fine with the small aforementioned delay in putting our house on the market.

i am also doing a bit of accompanying. one student lives in thornhill, and her exam is in richmond hill. that seems excessively far to drive, but her teacher is my friend and a little extra cash never hurt anyone.

all in all, things are good. just very very hectic!

OH, and i HAVE watched the last new episode of grey's, and i WILL blog about it. just not now. (i'm a busy girl, remember?)

reduce, reuse, recycle

my kitty likes to play with garbage. so much so, that when i eat anything with a crinkly wrapper, she comes running. i crumple it into a ball and throw it. as the refuse is flying through the air, scout cries in delight, runs after it and plays with it until it's all ratty and gross and it's all very cute. kris and i were visiting his mother and she gave us lindt chocolates...i scrunched my wrapper up and strated a throwing motion before i remembered that scout was not there and it was not my house to dirty. oops.

scout also sticks her head in the garbage and fishes out old "toys" of hers that we threw out. this is admirable since some of her playthings are at the bottom of the can but in my mind, she will always be a garbage picker. at least it's economical, and i'll try to ignore the part about the germs.

resolve this! (version 2008)

my new year's resolutions:

1. complain less. people have joked with me that i like to complain. so i'm trying to stop. this means that my ongoing series "surrounded by idiots," may be discontinued, either because i've resolved my resolution, or because we (hopefully) will have moved out and will no longer be surrounded by idiots. by the way, last week someone ran over the stop sign outside my building again. this time because it happened when there was snow on the ground, there are actual tire tracks, so i expect to see a CSI team investigating the matter any minute now. at least i can stop worrying that there's an unknown entity (bigfoot?) that is running over stop signs.
2. work out more. i don't need to lose weight, but it's never a bad thing to be healthy. this includes taking advantage of the gym while we have access to it, or just going for walks.
3. go to church regularly. we haven't been in a long time.
4. read more. i also vow to finish something written by ayn rand, as i have a couple of her books in my possession, but haven't actually sat down to read them.

i'm quite proud as my resolutions for this year are much better than they were last year. and, of course, i will be more proud if i can actually stick to them.

to a new beginning

the end of the 2007 turned to be a little melancholy...i found out about the recent passing of a good friend's father. he was a great man and i know he will be missed.

on a more superficial note, i finished reading one of my christmas presents, the kite runner; it was beautifully written but the stories of terrorism and needless violence have resonated in me. kris thinks i shouldn't read sad books since i seem to internalize the events, at least for a little while...but that's a sign of a well-written story, right?

we rang in the new year at a friend's house - they served an extravangant four-course meal; my favourite was the wild mushroom bisque with truffle essence and creme fraiche! wow. the cocktails were flowing and it was a great time. these friends recently had a baby so we oohed and ahhed over His Cuteness.

afterwards we were sleeping over at another friend's house and played euchre into the wee hours of the morning. fun times with close friends!

happy new year! i hope 2008 brings happiness and health, and replaces fresh wounds with fond memories.
