4+12=5
tonight, my student told me that he thought a 4 hour flight was an excessively long time to be stuck in an airplane. i told him that there are some flights that are over 12 hours, like ones going to asia. then he said indignantly, "oh yeah? you think that's crazy? well, iiiii have 5 aunties!"

wow. sloan really needs to learn a thing or two about TIMING. can't he read between the lines and see that derek is broken?!
speaking of which, i love that derek is broken. it shows that he's human. and i love that meredith isn't running away and she's rising to the challenge. they finally have a real relationship! happiness! i like that she stuck by him when addison was contemplating going to the chief (although in the end, she probably shouldn't have). the next episode proves to be a DOOZY. i don't spoil it for you in case you don't want to know, but if you do want to know, go to this website and click on episode that's highlighted in blue (march 12). having said that, the next new episode airs on march 12. MARCH 12?!?!? *sob*
it's an interesting concept, the old school surgery versus the new school surgery - dr. campbell was right, what does one do when faced with doing surgery without electricity? apparently back in the old days, they wore really really poor-fitting face masks that made them look like bank robbers. her face mask was driving me CRAZY, i almost couldn't watch it. then i had to admire the neat pleats on everyone else's mask that make it so form-fitting to the face. sigh, is this what OCD is like?
who thinks izzie has skin cancer? i don't. it has to be a brain tumour. what kind of skin cancer gives you depth perception problems and hallucinations? unless it's so bad that it's spread...from her back...to her head...or through her spine...?! but wouldn't you notice a lesion that's so bad that it goes through your spine to your head and results in crazy, ratings-sacrificing behaviour? we'll see what they do with this one.
owen and cristina are soooo cute! he wants to be there 40 years from now! as if she didn't catch onto that when he said it. who makes plans for 40 years in the future?? adorable.
i keep writing these too late after the episode airs, so that's all i have for now. maybe i'll add more later since it looks like i'll have to watch old episodes to tide me over until march 12. hmph.

re: before and after
i liked that this week was about each character, and who they used to be, and who they are now. but i felt like meredith's insecurity about derek's old life should have happened, oh, about 4 seasons ago. i realize that naomi and sam weren't around to reminisce, but it's still a little ridiculous. i also feel like the whole derek/addison power struggle in the OR is old news, which is why, while i'm not NOT looking forward to next week's episode, i am happy to see this cross-over business go away. and seriously, they didn't get why derek was so uncomfortable talking about the wedding song?
why didn't any other doctor in the US think to get rid of the cysts one at a time? i am no expert, but of course it's not going to work to try to get rid of them all at once. it's like juggling cysts - and appparently they're slippery little suckers. one at a time only makes sense.
i like what they did with owen's back story...at first it seemed like he was just a big jerk, but now we see that he has changed, and cristina, who is co-queen of being dark and twisty, accepts him for who he has become: dark and twisty (duh).
and yes, dear hayley, i think you are right - sadie definitely mixed up the lab results and i think izzie has a brain tumour. can i just say that introducing sadie into the show seems like a big waste of time now? why even bother? they didn't even commit to her and meredith's friendship - at the beginning, we all thought it was hard to believe that someone so close to meredith could remain hidden all this time. i'm still not convinced. is it because they needed self-mutilating, sexually confused cast member on which to pawn off all of their crazy storylines? what's wrong with using george? or izzie? they're writing them both off anyway.
i was going to comment on the private practice part of the episode, but it's too long ago and i'm tired. so i'll leave it at that. hayley and melissa, feel free to add your own tidbits. :)

re: beat your heart out
can i just say that it was a dirty trick? a dirty, dirty trick, to make us believe that the cross-over grey's-private practice episode was happening this week starting in grey's. but they introduced the whole thing in private practice, so i had no choice but to watch it. (and enjoy it). i PVR-ed it though, so if they're expecting private practice's ratings to go up, my watching it won't contribute. ha, take THAT! but now the big cross-over episode is happening NEXT week? dirty dirty dirty. and mean. and addison better keep her hands off derek or i'll have to hurt her. there, i feel better. now onto grey's...
it was so great to see cristina and meredith as friends again. i love that even though they were fighting, they can go back to normal as if nothing happened - a sign of a strong friendship.
why does derek keep toting the ring around with him? and he wonders why everyone knows. hey derek, maybe you should keep it in your breast pocket and make your patient look at it so she can almost ruin the surprise. yeesh. i did love his comment, "she spooks easy" - so cute! like she's a horse, but in a good way, of course.
when meredith said to derek that they would have cute kids, he was all smiles. she thinks it's him that's freaking out, but it's all her because those words slipped out of her mouth so easily. typical.
the cute couple got engaged in a supermarket where they first met - does this mean derek will propose at JOE'S BAR??? he clearly can't propose to her naked on her living room floor (season 1, episode 1), so joe's bar has to be the most logical option. or maybe he'll create an engagement ring of candles. swoon.
i think the whole proposal storyline will be put on hold because of the addison's-dying-brother storyline. i also think that while meredith has finally let her guard down, she will rebuild it, stronger than ever because:
a) she seems to think derek doesn't want her babies
b) he blew her off for dinner because he was "busy"
c) he's going to go to addison's rescue, so she'll think addison is back in the picture
d) the out-of-place rose petal only confirms her suspicions. that he's cheating on her, in her own house and bed. scandal!
this will prolong the whole thing, which means we are on track to seeing a proposal in the season finale. where derek will finally break down meredith's walls, once and for all.
victorian romance novel...while i get what they were trying to do, having cristina and owen mirror ellis' relationship with the chief - the stolen glances and almost-holding hands (lexie and sloan did that at the beginning in the elevator too?) - it all seemed a bit cheesy. i think it was the slow motion scenes with the musical interludes played on an out-of-tune piano that ruined it for me. seriously, if you could choose between a tuned piano and a non-tuned piano, why pick the non-tuned one?? i suppose in the victorian times they didn't care too much about keeping their pianos tuned, but still. and who is hunt's mystery woman!! is it a former fiancee? why did he freak out like he did? the guys asked hunt if he had ever proposed before, and he said he's not the guy to talk to about that. surrrrrre.
i love that lexie stood up to sloan and gave him the take-it-or-leave-it ultimatum. and i love that sloan wuvs lexie, and wants to tell derek so very badly! but can't. yet. adorable.
so many good lines this week:
-arizona to bailey on being a ped surgeon - "open up her chest and hand her the rest of her life."
-meredith on having derek's babies - "my babies will have alzheimer's. and suicidal tendencies. and split ends."
-dixon to bailey - "you're a very tiny person."
-der to mer on her faulty DNA - "meredith - i want your crappy babies"...i LOVE it!
it's ironic that the thing that make dixon have a panic attack was a hug, and then thing that she needed to calm down was a hug. did you notice, when cristina went over to hug her, she had the typical asian stick arms that didn't move as she walked. hahah!
so cute at the end, when hunt was sleeping on cristina. my cat sleeps on me like that. it's very enjoyable. sometimes it hurts my back but it's worth it. i'm digressing so i'll finish it off with this...
arizona is really good at giving the ranty speeches that the writers like to write. she does thing with her eyes, where she's all shifty-eyed. it kind of makes her look a little crazy but also more real. however. i really don't like that they keep springing lesbians on us, it's worse than watching a low-budget zombie movie. whatever happened to sadie and callie? did the writers feel they didn't chemistry? or is this leading up to a gratuitous lesbian threesome, god help us all? i guess we'll find out...
