ohh, ohh, ohh, ohh, ohhh...the white stuff

it's supposed to be in poor taste to wear white to a wedding when you're not the bride. i'm attending a wedding this weekend and i have an fashion etiquette dilemma. can you guess what it's about?

i've made mention of my white coat before. it's one of my most prized possessions, along with kris (is it wrong i consider him my possession? at least he's top of my list!), my piano and my cat. i think that's pretty impressive company for my coat to be rubbing elbows with!

despite my love for my white coat, the questions remains...can i wear it to the wedding without getting dirty looks from other people? technically the coat is not pure white...it's off-white. cream. ivory. vanilla. and it's not like i'm going to wear the coat indoors for long periods of time. and it's a winter-ish coat and looks so much nicer than my real winter coat.

so...can i? please? someone just tell me to wear it.

ring pops > flowers

i had two recitals for my students tonight. they all played so well! i'm like a proud momma right now. i normally buy all of my students a flower to congratulate them on a good performance, but i didn't have time to go to the florist before the recital - i was teaching up until 15 minutes before. so instead, i bought my students ring pops. i'm told this is even better than flowers, which is good to know. ooh, and one of my students gave me an orchid. soooo pretty! so...does anyone know how to take care of an orchid?

in conclusion, i just have to express my disdain for justin timerblake as he had to inconveniently choose his concert date to be the same as my recital. how rude! (just kidding dana and erin, hope you guys had fun!)

my jaw-jaw stinks

i fell off the wagon. i was clean for almost 10 months, and i fell off the wagon. haha, no i'm not an alcholic...i'm talking about tempromandibular disorder, or tmjd. basically my jaw tenses up and the muscles seize and i can't open my mouth or bite down or talk without pain. i'm pretty sure that the ridiculous stress of my work during the past few weeks has precipitated it. it's not quite as bad as it was when it was at its worst previously...i am seeing my osteopath hopefully this week to help.

on a brighter note - work should slow down by the end of this week.

in the meantime, i have a good excuse to eat pudding, mashed potatoes and jell-o. yummy!

trailer trash

i have issues with movie trailers. their original purpose is to lure you to go see the movie. i find that trailers these days contain WAY too many scenes from the movie it's advertising, thereby giving away most of the movie. trailer...or spoiler?

now that there is a tv program called "nothing but trailers". these trailers are even longer than the traditional trailers contained at the beginning of movies and reveal more information. but. these trailers are in high-definition. HIGH DEFINITION! which is how we ended up watching it, but i digress.

there is a new jennifer garner movie (i can't remember the title, but that's a minor detail). her fiance dies, his best friend is a jerk, she has to move out of her apartment because she can't afford it alone, moves in with two weirdo guys, she puts on her wedding dress because she never got to wear it, jerk best friend comes in and sees her, they fall in love and they live happily ever after. oh, and there's some freaky blonde girl who jennifer garner has issues with, i think she's the jerk best friend's son's mother and she is jealous of her.

i rest my case. it's like i got the cole's notes for this movie. this is silly because reading a book takes energy and some kind of intellect. watching a movie does not.

i hereby declare my boycott of trailers. if this means i have to bury my face and plug my ears randomly during commercials, so be it. if this means i have to purposely go to a movie 20 minutes later than the original showtime, so be it. trailer trash no more!

people who look like people, part iii

featuring my adorable nephew and one of my niece's TV characters, pocoyo. i am so out of touch when it comes to what's "in" with the toddlers these days, but this guy looks pretty cool. props to kenji for doing the hard work for me and supplying pictures.

cute!

an ode to vanessa

vanessa made a white chocolate raspberry cheesecake for kris' mom for some culinary healing, and made one for us while she was at it because she is the nicest person ever.

vanessa, we think you should open up your own dessert cafe on roncesvalles. granted, you will have some competition from "queen of tarts," but we think you can take the queen. kris wants you to name your shop, "queen of farts" for an edgier kind of dessert place, or you could just call it butterfly.

kris' mom says thank you very much. you definitely put a smile on her face.

we say thank you very much. we think you're a little crazy for making so many cakes, but we will accept them gladly and will be your test bunnies anytime!

the elusive puffy shirt

no, i'm not talking about the infamous puffy shirt from seinfeld...just puffy sleeves, no excessive frills or embellishments.

i finally found it! i've found a several candidates in my search, but there was always something wrong. too big, wrong colour, too loud in pattern, parachute material, indecorous bows, etc. most importantly, i hadn't yet found a contender with the appropriate amount of puff - not too much to echo 80s taffeta dresses, but enough so that it doesn't sag...in a nutshell, months of searching and to no avail.

but i've found it. in a store that i don't usually even browse, this store had zillions of puffy shirts! i may go to back to buy one more, because my new friend is so cute and was dirt cheap. i shall name her lafayette.

for those of you keeping track, this means that i have scored two items from my wish list - i also bought black pumps for new year's eve. they are very difficult to walk in but very fun! just need to find the black pashmina, which i almost got for $20 but alas, no black. my work here is almost done - then i will create a new wish list and start all over again!

re: six days, part ii

i KNEW addison had a story. earlier in this season, there was a happy couple who was having a baby...and they lost the baby when the woman fell in the shower. addison was so affected by this and i knew something would come out sooner or later. i wonder if derek will ever find out.

george's dad was sooo sad and even more tragic when you see that one of the writers actually lived the story, pretty much down to every detail. (see greyswriters.com!)

this episode had more emotional moments; this confirms that it was meant to be one episode that got split into two since the first one was more heavy on the laughs - although the fart scene was pretty entertaining.

i still don't know about alex and addison. wasn't alex still in love with izzie like two weeks ago?! geez, make up your mind!

i wonder if i should change the name of my blog from "r a n d o m m i k o" since my ramblings clearly have a theme and thus are not random. "g r e y s a n a t o m y m i k o" may work better...

"serious?"

i teach a very cute 6-year old girl. she's small and cute and smart and asian and did i mention she is cute?

sometimes she calls me "yuh-miko" - i can't decide if it's because she thinks my name is yumiko or if she just pronounces it funny.

now, as most of my readers are grey's anatomy fans, i know this will be appreciated. this student of mine has started to reply to anything i say by saying "...serious?"

i'm tempted to convince her to add a "ly" so she can be the youngest grey's fan ever. then she can say to me "yuh-miko. seriously." tee hee!

14 January 2007

people who look like people, part ii

i know you've all been waiting for it...i should preface my big reveal by saying it's a neat coincidence that my first installment of "people who look like people" involved our friend sebastian. now i present another one of our friends, who happens to be sebastian's brother. behold, chris (affectionately known as chris smith)...with his celebrity look-alike, christian slater.

yeah, yeah...i won't quit my day job. i do think this would be a fun career, to run around and find people who look like people for a living. just as long as my salary didn't depend on how much my people actually do look like people...

11 January 2007

left-cheeked miko

in my excitement of watching the new episode of grey's, i split my pants.

well, i don't know if it was from excitement, or more that i tried adjusting my sitting position without realizing i was sitting on my pant leg. as i moved, i heard a tearing sound but thought it was my imagination. it wasn't.

also. i have a pair of jeans that have a tear in exactly the same spot. coincidence? i think not. perhaps i am a lopsided sitter and place more weight on my left butt cheek. my jeans are almost 6 years old, which probably helped it to rip, BUT right side of my jeans aren't even starting to wear through. *insert eerie music here*

now i have to buy new pants. yay!

re: six days

first things first. since when was grey's anatomy renamed "inappropriate relationships between interns and attendings"? or "your suitor is your superior with a scalpel"?

tonight's episode was thrilling...meredith's snoring and derek's morning breath...izzie's freakout at the bank...george's poor father...cristina stalking burke's room and eventually sleeping on his couch...alex defending addison by giving mcsteamy a vanilla latte...

what was the fantastic surgery that alex was supposed to scrub in for? did i miss something? it couldn't have been meredith's niece since that was an emergency surgery...

and did you NOTICE that meredith's hair? perhaps she is feeling empty with the return of her father, sparking reminders of how he was never there for her, thus the waviness. or maybe her stylist was on vacation or her flat iron short-circuited...who knows. i'm glad to see that meredith and derek are having happy moments, she with squinty eyes, he with twinkly. i find the worst thing tv shows can do is finally pair the "it" couple together, then makes one of them not nice or fun anymore, making the couple fight all the time only to split them up and have an awkward relationship where they try to be friends but can't. we'll see how long this lasts. hopefully forever. sigh.

oh, the sputum

so much for wishing for a sickness...when i wrote that, i had a persistent cough. it's turned into a hacking, phlegmy cough and my voice is not unlike a voice of a man, or at least a teenage boy. but this morning i started to have a sharp pain in my chest to accompany my chorus of barking. the pain has since gone away, but if it returns i will go to the doctor.

i went online to do a little self-diagnosis. so according to my research, i either have pneumonia or a pulmonary embolism. just call me dr. miko.

miso hungry...for a hamburger

i heard on 680 news today that there is a japanese girl's school that is only accepting students who can lift a marble from one plate to another with chopsticks. i bet i could pass the chopstick test, too bad i don't have any marbles so i can prove it...it appears i've lost my marbles! tee hee.

anyway, apparently japanese youth are not embracing typical cuisine and culture and eating hamburgers instead of the typical fish, rice and miso soup. they should make a movie a la "supersize me" to expose mcdonald's evil ploy to sway japanese girls from their heritage. why, they could call it "pass the cheezu-burger"!

08 January 2007

a day in the life of a glass

this is how my day began...

i enter best buy, excited to return veronica mars, season 2, in exchange for grey's anatomy, season 2. glass is half full and optimistic!

there was a long line-up even though it was 10am on the first weekday on which people should theoretically be working. glass is half empty.

i had no receipt and veronica mars was on sale at futureshop for practically half price, while grey's anatomy was still full price. glass is half empty and worried that i will only get $35 for my veronica mars.

luckily, best buy did not have the same sale so i got a gift card in exchange for $77. glass is half full.

on my way out, i check out the dvds and grey's anatomy season 2 was in stock AND i was able to grab the last one. glass is half full!

i went to sherway to renew the sticker for kris' car (which we were supposed to do in december, oops). glass is unchanged.

i set off for work straight from sherway...on my way, i notice a police car merging onto the highway. i check my speed and set the cruise control to 100km. i am behind the cop and congratulate myself on noticing her. glass is more full and a very defensive driver!

i notice the police car is getting on the winston churchill exit (my exit). at a set of lights, the police car is in the right lane and i pull up beside her in the middle lane. i forget that my sticker still hasn't been changed. glass is oblivious.

the cop must have been very observant or specifically looking for un-renewed license plates, so when i turned, she followed me and pulled me over. glass is empty!

she walks up to my window and i apologize for not having my sticker renewed. i showed her the sticker and told her that i just needed to put it on...we have a plate cover, so that's why i didn't do it right away. she tells me that normally i would have received a ticket and to make sure to put the sticker on when i get home. i agree and it looks like i will get away with no ticket. glass is full!

she asks to see my insurance. it turns out i didn't have the right card with me - i still had last year's. she asks if i even have insurance, to which i say yes. she takes my registration and license to her car. glass is empty, oh so empty.

after discussing with someone on her walkie-talkie and making writing motions, she returns...and just gives me a warning! she tells me that i could have received 3 tickets totalling almost $300 but she will let it go. i thank her profusely. glass is full!

on the whole, a good day with some bumps along the way. and...only 4 days until the weekend. sigh.

...is it wrong that i want to come down with an illness so i can stay home and watch grey's anatomy all day long? i would feel bad calling in sick when i wasn't actually sick...but the season 2 dvd is beckoning me...tempting me...

a blinding view

our condo faces, and is at the same height, as the gardiner expressway. we have floor-to-ceiling windows, but no window coverings. this was more a matter of fiscal prudence than an interior design decision. eleven and a half months later, we still haven't gotten around to getting any drapes or blinds. we've looked into prices and decided to get blinds for the master bedroom, for obvious reasons...but we still haven't officially gotten them.

and now we keep receiving these flyers jammed in our front door advertising blinds for cheap. my question is, is there a blind company that is scouring the condo for bare windows and placing flyers in those doors...or do they just do a mass drop (although it would be easier to have them placed in mailboxes)...or are these flyers from our neighbours, a subtle way of telling us to get window coverings?

i guess we shall never know. until then, i'll see YOU on the gardiner! or should i say, YOU'LL see ME from the gardiner!

03 January 2007

smells like teen spirits

i would just like to say that the stench of wine and beer has finally been extinguished from our condo. this is from the party that happened 5 days ago.

also, it is highly unadvised to drink two cans of expired tomato juice after consuming a large amount of alcohol. it results in orange vomit stains on a beautiful shower curtain. well, the stains aren't that big, but still...gross. it's even worse when the puke doesn't belong to you or your husband, but rather a near stranger. also, i don't think i can eat sweet chili heat doritos for a very long time.

*wrinkles nose*

january tv premieres

i have been wondering when my tv shows will return with new episodes. i found this handy list on eonline.com - i also added the link to "watch with kristin," on my list of favourite sites. "watch with kristin" is a column that gives dirt on tv shows and spoilers. i used to read this religiously, but it kind of ruined the whole tv watching experience since i always knew what was going to happen. like, i knew that marissa was going to die on the o.c.! so read her column with caution and try not to get addicted.

here is the list of january premieres. i have taken the liberty of putting asterisks beside my shows of interest! maybe one of my new year's resolutions should have been something about limiting the amount of tv that i watch...*ponders*...nah...

happy watching!

resolve this!

we rang in the new year in oakville - my work friend's husband works at the oakville conference centre, and he got us a pretty good deal on the tickets. the ticket included a 5-course meal, open bar, champagne toast at midnight and party favors. we also got VIP treatment because we were sitting at my work friend's table, so we got nicer wine than everyone else, nicer bottles of champagne and we got our food first. it was definitely a fun time! less drunken debauchery than kris' birthday party, but i think that's a good thing.

here are some of my new year's resolutions - i've noticed it's more of a to-do list, but oh well. i don't smoke and i think my weight is okay which are usually the big two resolutions.

1. play squash bi-weekly
2. buy one less coffee a week (i only buy coffee about 3 times a week anyway)
3. clean my car
4. help kris clean his car
5. think of more resolutions because this list is kind of lame

the end. happy new year!
