happiness

i told my student about my new-found love for red velvet cupcakes. so she brought me one that she made herself - complete with cream cheese icing!

that, and the fact that my students had their recital tonight and all did very very well, made my day. they make me look good. and that's a nice feeling.

re: stairway to heaven

i'll admit that i strayed a few times with where the izzie/denny storyline was going. my first instinct was that she was going to die...then i thought she'd kill herself, then i thought denny would just leave...but now i think i'm back to my first instinct. or maybe she won't actually die and she'll get the miracle that denny talked about. yeesh, who knows.

by the way, i love it when they get someone else to do the voice-overs...whenever i hear someone other than meredith at the beginning, i know it's going to be a crazy episode. i also liked how izzie found herself telling melinda that she needed to be there for jackson to help him die...then she realized she was echoing denny's words and the flashbacks started...

the acting was incredible this week:

1. bailey's insomniac-tic haze of confusion and despair. how she chose the oath in the end, even though she almost didn't, and even though in this circumstance it went against everything she stood for, she still stayed true to her promise...she looked so small in the OR while she grappled with her emotions. then how she broke down once the transplant was complete when she realized what she had almost done, and that she still wasn't sure she had done the right thing. i love how bailey's lines can just be one line repeated twice, and chandra wilson delivers it with such raw emotion that makes it hard to believe she's actually acting.

2. how the chief coached george to give choice to the families, and not to pressure them...then he couldn't help but ignore his own advice.

3. meredith's hysteria...it was like she was cheating on derek - from when she told william how to die and not paging derek...also the flickers of tenderness that william would show meredith, like saying how derek was lucky to have her - there's something so revolting about a serial killer saying that to you, but also it didn't turn meredith off...then of course, her going to william's execution...these were moments where emotionally she felt she was betraying derek but couldn't help herself. she's learning more and more that she can be herself, have her own thoughts/feelings and derek will still love her. swoon. side note: when she came out of the prison and was a tearful mess, i also was a tearful mess...then kris patted me and said "it's okay," and DEREK said the same thing to MER seconds later! yeah yeah, i know that "it's okay" is not a ground-breaking response to someone's grief, but i still felt a small moment of closeness to derek at that point. almost as close as photoshopping my face onto meredith's...almost. :)

i remember a simpsons hallowe'en episode where snake dies, so homer gets his hair transplanted onto his head, and then he inherits snake's murderous and violent tendencies...yes, it's just a cartoon, but there are also cases where a person who has had a transplant will have memory traces from the donor (but it appears it's most common in heart patients). this was always in the back of my mind whenever it seemed like william was going to get his wish to donate his organs to jackson. so i think it's best he got his organs from someone else, who was a good person. a good person who is not on death row.

funniest line ever on this show? "i broke his bone" - HAHA! how adorable was it, when sloan begged lexie to leave because he didn't want her to see him like that? that's when i realized that this for certain that this is actually going to go somewhere (that, and i don't think the show needs another meaningless-romp-in-the-bedsheets kind of relationship and i am certain shonda feels the same way. don't you, shonda?). and how adorable was it, when lexie came back anyway, and told him she was going to climb into bed with him and stroke his hair. and the wonderful moment when he succumbed and leaned his head in...tough guy is not-so-tough anymore!

i saved the best for the end. the ring. i love how derek showed cristina the ring. and how he tried to get her to start mending the friendship. and that he realizes mer will freak out when he proposes, and that he needs cristina to support her so she makes the right decision. and how he went to cristina at the end when meredith wouldn't stop crying (props to cristina...as mad as she is at meredith, she still comes through for her "person" in said person's greatest time of need). i love how vulnerable derek is right now, and most of all, how he is totally fine with it. and how he knows he can't replace cristina in meredith's life but that they can be a great team.

by the way, i'm dying to know what mer said to cristina in the car. i thought it was started with something like "i know you won't understand"...but not sure. thoughts? maybe we'll get the inside-the-car perspective at a later episode? or maybe we'll never know. i'll add it to my list of questions that i plan on asking shonda if i ever get a chance to meet her...

seeing red...

i've always maintained that "red" should be its own food group. everything that is red is good. to name a few...produce (apples, strawberries, cherries, tomatoes, radishes, beets, red peppers). steak. cherry pie filling (deserves a separate mention, for sure). tabasco sauce. red candy (suckers, ju-jubes, cinnamon hearts, jelly beans, hard candy, shall i go on?). and we can't forget sweet and sour chicken ball sauce.

and i've found something else to add to the list: red velvet cake. i've never tried it, but ever since seeing it on the apprentice years ago, i've been intrigued, i've just never had the opportunity to try it. until now! starbucks makes red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese icing!! i tried it, and i like - i may even love. even if it stains my fingers red - i knew there was a reason why the barista offered me a fork - it is totally worth it. i'm not sure if it's worth $3, but maybe that will help me fight the urge to have one (or five) a day.

yummm.

re: my predictions

going back to my predictions from the season premiere:

1. i think cristina will shed her negative-nancy view on life. the icicle impaled her on the very same spot that burke was almost killed; burke continues to haunt her in the background of her life, what with him leaving her at the altar, and going on to win prestigious awards without her. cue owen, crazy army guy whose voice sounds a lot like sloan's. maybe she'll move on and learn how to be happy.

hmm. not yet. but soon. soon, this will happen.

2. of course, derek will propose to meredith. maybe in the season finale? swoon! happily ever after! HAPPILY EVER AFTER!

duh, YEAH. this is totally going to happen. HAE! HAE!!!!

3. alex and izzie will hook up again. and the girl that alex was making out with in his room? was that ROSE?!?!? it couldn't be...but it was her hair...maybe they ran out of money to pay more actors, so they just asked rose to pretend to be alex's hussy.

ok, so i wasn't right about alex making out with rose, but i definitely was right about them hooking up again. hussy is funny word. sometimes i make myself laugh.

4. george and lexie will also hook up, but they will realize they're better as friends (poor george, that always seems to happen to him), and lexie and SLOAN will start dating. i'm not sure how i feel about that.

i think they decided to cut out the george/lexie romance once they realized he wanted out of the show. i firmly stand by my original forecast that they were going to hook up. but i guess we'll never know for sure.

5. erica and callie...i guess they'll live happily ever after too. i kind of wanted hahn to be written off the show, especially since she's a bad teacher anyway, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen.

APPARENTLY I CAN MAKE THINGS COME TRUE. i wish i had x-ray vision. i wish i had x-ray vision. i wish i had x-ray vision!!!!

6. the chief will have to come to terms with the fact that he's harbouring resentment towards meredith for being ellis' daughter.

hmm. i suppose the tension between him and mer have dissipated. can't remember how though.

7. bailey will realize that her estranged husband is now a professional assassin in prison break who stalks and kills innocent people and will move on.

done and done. maybe this is why she's been cranky lately. i really should quit my day job.

re: sympathy for the devil

this was chock-full of great moments and speeches!

derek talking fast and staring the serial killer in the eye. alex blowing up at arizona. then arizona calmly retaliating with the reality of being a pediatrician at a hospital. bailey yelling at sadie (can someone explain to me why though? or was bailey just really upset about the whole situation and taking it out on sadie?).

before i forget, alex is the cutest thing ever, with his suggestion to go look at corn. it looks like arizona got through to him.

the alarmingly high ponytail was hilarious, the pink hair elastic just TIED it all together. hyuk. i never noticed, but meredith doesn't really smile with her teeth unless she's laughing. this is what happens when izzie is in charge, we get bubblegum hairdos and vampire smiles. it makes sense since izzie does have vampire teeth. coincidence?! maybe she's slowly turning everyone on the show into vampires.

of course derek's mother is a strong but kind, opinionated but rational, woman who can read you like a book. they kind of have the same hair. it definitely looks better on derek. i always pictured derek's mother to have more fashion sense than to put on a velour jumpsuit, though. i guess that is supposed to add to her "real-ness". i'll forgive her this one time.

i LOVE lexie's bumbling when mrs. shepherd asked her how many partners she's had. so cute. and how sweet was it that mrs. shepherd just wanted to make sure lexie was a good person, for mark. i wanted her to ask lexie if she flossed regularly. that kind of question always comes up when your character is under scrutiny. which is why i floss religiously. that, and my teeth are squished together so food always gets stuck in between. but i digress...

another thing i felt i missed - when did lexie move into meredith's attic?? i figured after the whole intern illegal surgery thing, but i think the actual part where lexie moved in was glossed over a bit. that scene is probably on the cutting room floor, unless i missed it?

cristina and owen's date. he was so cute with his little outfit and the flowers, but the drunkness overshadowed all that. how he actually showered with his suit on. and how much his time in iraq is affecting him (gulf war syndrome?). they will be good for each other.

the best part is, when meredith finally revealed her true self to mrs. shepherd, we all knew derek's mom would love her - she has to - and i LOVE that the reason why is because derek is black and white, while meredith? she's shades of GREY. GET IT?? i was waiting for her to say that but i guess the writers have something against puns on national tv. puns are definitely underrated around here.

one last thing: the scene at the end? so very disturbing! and graphic! i actually couldn't watch. *shudder* you can tell sweeps month is coming...

re: wish you were here

um, yes. derek's sour-lemon dancing face is SO the funniest thing i have seen in a long time. i have said that i miss the mer/der cuteness this season, so i'm glad to see it's returned. and the quickie was totally a gratuitous scene that was thrown in there to sate all of our thirsts. gratuitous or not, i'll take it. :)

i always enjoy getting to know more about our friends...derek's father being killed seems to add another layer to his hot complexity.

if only meredith would get over herself already. i don't blame cristina for being mad at her. she really should apologize to cristina. speaking of faltering friendships, i think they could have done a better job of implying that mer and sadie had a troubled history. i didn't see signs of that at ALL at the beginning, but i guess reunions are meant to be happy when two friends don't see each other for a while, regardless of their baggage? it does make sense that meredith would shut someone out of her life so easily with her abandonment daddy issues. oh thatcher, if only you knew what an damage you caused...

i love callie and sloan's relationship. i love how they tried to use each other to stop themselves from getting naked with an intern. to no avail.

it sounded like denny had a bit of a cold. since when do ghosts catch colds? i thought they were invincible! or at least immune to lowly human diseases. who knew?

speaking of which, i don't know where the izzie/denny/alex thing is going. the more i think about it, the more they can't kill izzie off. alex would be completely broken and would probably just curl up in the fetal position and become a zombie. a zombie in the fetal position. i wonder if denny will just choose to leave. whatever happens, i hope it happens soon. oh, and as IF she asked denny if he was going to give her a present for her birthday?! what is she expecting, ghost jewellery? or a ghost dinner? a ghost trip to the caribbean? yeesh. whenever i think i might be able to tolerate izzie, she goes and says something like this...

the holidays of 2008: the abridged version

an apology (sorry for not updating) and an update:

the holidays were a whirlwind of parties, dinners, celebrations and an all-around good time.

our builder was in a hurry to fix all the deficiencies after we sent some emails, outlining how long we've been waiting, and reminding them of our initial list of things that needed to be fixed (from june), along with the repairs they've done since that also need to be fixed because they were done poorly. they sent some guys to fix the patch of drywall that rohan did (turns out that while he was very polite, he was not-so-good with the drywall repair - the drywall started bubbling soon after he left). then a few days later, they sent more guys to fix the drywall that the second guy did. they were actually sanding drywall on christmas eve. i had the table set already for christmas eve and was tired of taking everything down to put it back together - i'd already done it twice - so instead i draped plastic sheets on it for protection. how very dexter of me. now it's fixed and finally looks normal.

they also sent a guy to fix some of the cracks in the drywall. this guy ended up breaking a glass thingie in our ensuite (it was garbage anyway), but didn't tell us even though we were home. instead, he cleaned it up and told us afterward that he broke something and offered to pay for it. we told him it was going to thrown out anyway, so not to worry. no big deal, right? later that night, i went to wash my face and grabbed my face towel which was on a hook on the bathroom door. it was hard and shiny. i looked closer - it was hard from drywall putty residue and shiny from shards of glass. he had used my towel to clean up the glass! and THEN the next day when kris was vaccuuming, he found a bunch of glass under the bath mat. apparently this guy cleans up messes like he's 5 years old. actually, i'm sure 5 year olds could clean up glass better than him. then he kicked his ladder to move it instead of picking it up and carrying it, right in front of me! and not just once, but like 800 times! i counted. and scowled at him. he didn't notice.

we got an ikea christmas tree this year, and it actually looked beautiful! totally worth the $1 that it cost, although i have to yet to redeem the $20 gift card i got in exchange for buying it. i keep meaning to post pictures, so maybe i'll do that soon.

we hosted christmas eve dinner with kris' family. because it is supposed to be a traditional polish meal, and because i'm japanese-canadian, kris' mom brought the food. we were happy we didn't have to cook and kris' mom was happy she didn't have to clean. win/win.

we enjoyed christmas day with the fam on the farm. on the fam farm. tee hee.

i threw kris a birthday party and tested the limits of how many people can actually fit in our house comfortably. our neighbours don't hate us even though it was a loud and long celebration, and one of our guests called their dog fat. oops?

we went shopping on boxing day at yorkdale - crazy, i know! got some great deals at crate and barrel, which made the craziness worth it. i waited in line for 15 minutes to get INTO bcbg, and then i wanted an hour to try ON the dresses i found at bcbg. i ended up buying a dress somewhere else. and it was one of the only dresses in the store that wasn't reduced by 50% or 75%. still it was 30% off, a beautiful dress that fits and a fairly good deal so i'm happy.

new year's eve was a blast with friends at a banquet hall. a chance to dress up, a 5 course meal, dancing and open bar - it was a night to remember. if only i could remember it...

and as always, january has jolted me back to reality. "hello, january" (a la seinfeld's "hello, newman" in case you didn't get that - it's hard to type inflections). so we meet again....
